What are the physical characteristics of red pandas?
Red pandas are a smaller mammal and roughly the size of a domestic cat. They are 50-64 cm long with their tail 28-59 cm long. It is report of them that “they have rust coloured velvet fur, a big bushy tail ringed pale yellow and with a light coloured ‘false’ thumb on the wrist of the front paws, which like the giant pandas, can grip bamboo to feed on.” In addition, they have a small head with patches of white fur on their face, long, narrow canine teeth and broad molars. Red pandas live in dense bamboo and coniferous forests in the mountains, where it is cold and wet. The fur is thick to keep warm.
